Michael was a captive gorilla with a vocabulary of over 600 signs. The sign for ‘lip’ was how he said ‘girl’, thus ‘cut neck lip (girl) hole’. It’s believed this was his way of recounting to his keepers the death of his mother at the hands of poachers.
