Save Campbell Arcade
- investigative documentary commissioned by Sticky Institute
Save Campbell Arcade showcases how community action and resistance can make impactful changes. In 2017 the Australian government-supported Metro Tunnel Project presented plans to demolish protected architecture and spaces in the Melbourne CBD, to make way for new underground passageways. As tenants of the heritage-listed Campbell Arcade were being served notices of eviction, Sticky Institute stalwart Luke You commissioned Melbourne filmmaker David Mahler to interview business owners, politicians and City of Melbourne officials.
The result; the Project were pressured to significantly revise their plans, ensuring the protection of Campbell Arcade.

Cosmic Echo
- animated projection piece commissioned by SIGNAL Art Space, City of Melbourne
In 2017 I took part in the City of Melbourne's SIGNAL Screen Arts commission with nine other emerging artists. A two-channel projection artwork was developed over a half-year residency, and the final piece was screened at the Signal Art Space and a few other Australian venues before debuting internationally at the 2019 Digital Graffiti Festival in Alys Beach, Florida.
Projection artist Yandell Walton spearheaded the program, and I was grateful to have animator and artist Freya Pitt as my personal mentor.

Dig a Little Deeper
- feminist documentary created during the 2014 Looking Suzhou residency in China
Seven young women from Suzhou discuss their positions and roles as women in modern China, the history of women's rights in their country, and their hopes for their future, as we follow Pearl going about her daily routine in the cultural capital city of Suzhou.
These images and unfiltered voices offer us an honest view into the mentality of a commonly misconceived demographic. By revealing the steadfast nature of these young women we break down the notion of a repressed people and reveal the strong feminist mentality present in modern day China.
Featuring : Pearl
Written and directed : David Mahler
Produced : Wang Yutong
Official Selection:
Chinese American Film Festival, LA - 2014

Splendor Solis
- BFA Film and TV graduation film
For my Victorian College of the Arts/University of Melbourne graduation project way back in 2014 I tackled an ambitious sci-fi/fantasy production, making use of all the incredible resources our university had to offer.
At the peak of our nearly week-long shoot we had a total crew of around 30 and a cast of 18. We mounted a crowdfunding campaign on the Australian platform Pozible during pre-production and in the end we raised over AU$14,000 which meant that even after hiring new costumiers and set builders we could compensate all of our crew appropriately.
It was an immense challenge and I'm so proud of what our team accomplished!
