Cosmic Anthology
2017 - 2018
'Cosmic Anthology' is a series of five new media works and a body of 20 paintings by David Mahler. 'Cosmic Waves I-III' depicts the flowing currents of energy connecting and intersecting the universe, from the micro of atoms to the macro of galaxies. The four channel projection piece 'Cosmic Echo', commissioned by the City of Melbourne as part of the 2017 Signal Screen Arts Commission, expands on these concerns, depicting the flow of energies and by extension the element of consciousness through space, celestial bodies and forms of life. 'Cosmic Ballet' documents a time-based and site-specific performance piece undertaken by three 'dancers' on the moon-lit beach of Pui O, Hong Kong. Finally the collection of paintings 'Cosmic Ocean', first presented at Black Cat Gallery, Melbourne in May 2018, transposes the visual iconography explored in the Cosmic film series to a two-dimensional medium, offering a comment on the depiction and capturing of invisible energies and forces, and the deconstruction of time through patterned chaos.
